Abstract
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the relationship between the Church and the State was full of legal, political and even military confrontations. These disputes were characterized by a struggle for power, freedom and sovereignty in the process of building the Mexican State. The royal patronage and religious tolerance were key themes in these diatribes that took on different nuances, definitions and positions over time. The analysis of the vision of the Catholic hierarchy in this becoming is indispensable to understand the history between two institutions that share territory, society and culture and that still in our days continue modifying to reach the full coexistence.
